Drs. Joseph D. Murray and William Alexander proudly offer LUMINEERS® at our East Point practice, a minimal preparation type of veneer that is a great option for patients with especially sensitive teeth, or those who want to preserve a greater amount of natural tooth structure. These porcelain shells are very similar to traditional veneers, and they can achieve many of the same results. However, the porcelain is much thinner, so your dentist will need to remove little to no enamel from your teeth. Contact J.D. Murray, DDS & Associates today to learn more about LUMINEERS® and find out how they could enhance your smile.
What are LUMINEERS®?
LUMINEERS® are extremely thin shells of porcelain that are bonded to the front of one or more teeth. LUMINEERS® can perform many of the same functions as traditional veneers, and will be similarly crafted to match the natural shape and color of your smile. This type of veneer can conceal stains, cracks, and chips. In many cases, they can even improve the shape of your teeth, especially if you have worn or irregularly shaped teeth.
Because LUMINEERS® are much thinner than traditional veneers, they may not be suitable for all patients. For example, the thinner porcelain may not be able to conceal extremely dark stains or close gaps in your teeth. Before beginning treatment, you will discuss your concerns and goals with Dr. Murray or Dr. Alexander. After a thorough consultation, your dentist can recommend the optimal treatment for your needs.
Placing Your Veneers
To place LUMINEERS®, your dentist will need to trim away a much smaller amount of enamel than the portion he would remove for traditional veneers. In many cases, he may not have to remove any dental material at all. After any minimal preparation is complete, your dentist will take impressions of your teeth and send them to an offsite lab. Technicians will fabricate your veneers based on these impressions and other instructions, ensuring they will be a near-perfect match to your smile. After about two weeks, the LUMINEERS® will arrive back in our office. The dentist will lightly etch your teeth and attach the porcelain using dental cement. You will be able to immediately enjoy your beautiful, enhanced smile.
Benefits and Risks
While traditional veneers are very safe, LUMINEERS® pose even fewer risks. In particular, since your dentist will remove a minimal amount of enamel, there is little chance that you will experience dental sensitivity. In fact, LUMINEERS® are typically a great option for patients who already struggle with this concern. Like traditional veneers, LUMINEERS® are not permanent. Fortunately, because you will retain more of your tooth structure, you will still have full dental functionality if they are removed, even if you decide not to replace them. It is also easier to undergo future treatment, since you will lose very little enamel with each procedure.
