At J.D. Murray DDS & Associates, our customized dental crowns can impart strength and beauty to your smile. If you have broken, weakened, or otherwise compromised teeth, you may benefit from these stunningly lifelike restorations. To place a crown, Dr. Joseph D. Murray or Dr. William Alexander will reshape your tooth to accommodate the cap. Once the restoration is in place, you will enjoy renewed function and a seamless smile. In addition to traditional restorations, we offer convenient same-day dental crowns. Schedule your consultation at our East Point practice today to learn more.
Common Treatment Applications
You may be an excellent candidate for a dental crown if you suffer from:
- A broken tooth
- A cavity which requires a large filling
- A misshapen or worn tooth
- A severely discolored tooth
- An infection which necessitates a root canal procedure
In each of these situations, a dental crown can repair your damaged tooth and improve the appearance of your smile. Drs. Murray and Alexander also use crowns to top implant posts and support dental bridges.
To place a crown, your doctor will gently reshape your affected tooth. By removing a small amount of your tooth's structure, he will create a more stable base for the crown. Next, he will take impressions of your tooth. Offsite ceramists at our trusted dental lab will use this information and detailed aesthetic instructions to create a customized restoration that will fit securely over your tooth. Often, you will receive a temporary crown as you wait for your final restoration. When the crown is finished, you will come in for your second appointment. The doctor will check the fit and make sure the restoration does not interfere with your bite alignment. Then he will apply bonding material to your tooth and permanently attach your new crown.
We offer crowns made from several different materials. Metal restorations are incredibly durable and may be preferred for the molars, but they will not blend with your surrounding teeth. Porcelain-fused-to-metal is more aesthetically pleasing, but over time, the metal may begin to show. For the most lifelike appearance, we typically recommend all-porcelain crowns. Porcelain comes in many different shades, and you will receive a crown that is a near-perfect match to your surrounding teeth. Additionally, thanks to recent innovations, new forms of porcelain are nearly as strong and durable as metal.
We also proudly offer same-day crowns using advanced CEREC® technology. The newest addition to our practice, the CEREC® milling machine can create a beautiful restoration in a matter of minutes. To provide you with a same-day crown, your dentist will reshape your tooth. Then he will take pictures and digital impressions. The CEREC® system will create a digital model of your mouth on a chairside computer. These images will then guide the milling machine, which creates restorations out of blocks of high grade dental porcelain. Your dentist will attach your permanent crown, and you will be able to enjoy fully restored function after just one office visit.
