Candidates for Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a custom cap that fully covers a damaged tooth to provide strength and protection. They are used as a vital component of restorative treatments such as root canals. Crowns are also used as a cosmetic restoration to improve the appearance of misshapen and discolored teeth. Most patients who are candidates for conventional, lab-fabricated dental crowns are also candidates for same-day crowns.
Receiving a Same-day Crown
Receiving a same-day dental crown can restore the full function and aesthetics of your smile in one appointment. First, we will numb the treatment area to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Next, Dr. Murray will remove a layer of enamel from your tooth to create a stable base for your restoration and ensure it will be in proper alignment with surrounding teeth. Dr. Murray will then use the CEREC® CAD/CAM (computer-aided design or computer-aided manufacturing) technology to take highly detailed digital scans of your tooth.
The scans will be uploaded to a chair-side computer, and Dr. Murray will design your restoration based on your exact measurements. He will show you every step of the process and ensure that you understand the details of your procedure. The digital blueprint for your restoration is then sent an in-office milling unit, which carves your restoration from a solid piece of porcelain. This fabrication process takes about an hour or less. When your crown is finished, Dr. Murray will place it on the tooth, check the fit, and then cement it in place.
CEREC® technology allows for more precise scans and restorations, requiring less tooth preparation and allowing more of your natural tooth structure to be preserved.
