Dental Implant Timeline

Your dental implant timeline will depend upon your oral health and the extent of your procedure. However, you can typically expect treatment to last anywhere from four months to one year. Preparatory procedures like bone grafting and sinus lifts will prolong your timeline by several months but are integral to the success of your implant posts. During a private consultation at his Atlanta, GA, office, Dr. Joseph D. Murray can review the steps involved in your procedure and format a treatment plan that is suited to your unique needs.

Consultation and Examination

The first step of dental implants treatment is a consultation with Dr. Murray. During your visit, we can carefully examine your teeth and gums. We may also take x-rays or other advanced images of your smile for a more comprehensive view of your jawbone. After evaluating your medical history and current health, we can determine whether you are a candidate for dental implants. If you have suffered jawbone atrophy, you may require a preliminary bone graft or sinus lift before you qualify for treatment.

You can typically expect dental implant treatment to last anywhere from four months to one year.

Once we determine your candidacy, we can create your treatment plan. Patients who do not require any preliminary procedures can schedule their dental implant placement immediately.

After your first surgery, you will undergo a three to six month healing period before abutments can be placed.

Preliminary Procedures

In cases where the jawbone has begun to atrophy, Dr. Murray may recommend bone grafting or a sinus lift to ensure sufficient strength and space. Although these procedures increase the length of the overall timeline by about four to six months, they can provide a strong foundation for your dental implants. A healthy jawbone is integral to the success and longevity of your implant posts.

Dental Implant Surgery

On the day of the procedure, Dr. Murray can administer a local anesthetic as well as sedation to provide optimal comfort. Once you are ready, he can embed the implants in your jaw. The overall length of the procedure will depend upon how many implants you receive. In most cases, Dr. Murray can place a single dental implant in about one hour.

Osseointegration

After surgery, your body will undergo a three to six month healing period known as osseointegration. This is often considered to be the most important step in treatment. During this process, the dental implant fuses with surrounding tissue, becoming a permanent part of your smile. Dr. Murray can monitor your results through a series of follow-up appointments to ensure a smooth recovery.

Abutment Placement

Once you have healed, Dr. Murray can perform a second minor procedure. During this appointment, he can attach small connectors, known as abutments, to the tops of the implant posts. Abutments connect your custom restoration to the dental implant. Before you can receive your restoration, your gums must fully heal. This typically takes about two weeks.

Designing and Placing Your Restoration

Following the abutment placement, Dr. Murray can take impressions of your smile. These will be sent to our trusted dental laboratory and used to fabricate your restorations. We can design a variety of implant-supported restorations to meet your needs, including dental crowns, dental bridges, and dentures. Restorations typically take about two weeks to manufacture. Once your final prosthetic is ready, Dr. Murray can attach it to your implant post to reveal a beautifully restored smile.
