Dr. Joseph D. Murray can provide sinus lift surgery at our Atlanta, GA, practice to prepare the upper jaw for dental implants. After tooth loss occurs in the upper jaw, the bone begins to recede. Eventually, this results in an insufficient buffer between the sinus membranes and the jaw. A sinus lift involves bone grafting in addition to lifting the sinus membrane. With over 20 years of experience, Dr. Murray can safely and effectively restore your candidacy for implants.
Do I Need a Sinus Lift?
If you are missing multiple teeth near the back of the upper jaw, you may need a sinus lift. Bone loss in the jaw begins almost immediately following tooth loss, so the longer you wait to replace the missing teeth, the more bone loss you will suffer. We recommend sinus lifts to patients who are in good general health and are free from other oral health conditions such as gum disease.
How is Sinus Lift Surgery Performed?
After administering local anesthesia so you are comfortable, Dr. Murray will create incisions near the back of the jaw (typically the molar region). He will then make incisions in the bone itself to access the sinus membrane and lift it upward. Once the membrane is in proper position, he can fill the newly created space with a bone graft before suturing the incisions closed.
What is the Recovery Period Like?
Dr. Murray will give you detailed post-operative instructions for caring for your incisions and gums following the procedure. This will include a diet of soft foods to allow for proper healing. You may experience some bleeding from your incisions or through your nose during the first few days. It is important that you gently blow your nose to avoid causing a shift in the bone grafts.
It may take three to six months to completely heal after a sinus lift. The total length of your recovery will depend on your natural capacity to heal and how well you follow post-operative instructions. Once you have completely healed, Dr. Murray can perform dental implant surgery.
Although a sinus lift will add a few months to your overall treatment timeline, your dental implants can potentially last the rest of your life.
In limited circumstances, Dr. Murray can perform a sinus lift and place the dental implants in a single procedure. Dr. Murray can determine an appropriate treatment plan during a consultation. He will only recommend an expedited treatment if he believes it will not compromise the long-term success of your dental implants.
