Relax during Treatment with Snooze Dentistry

If you are fearful about undergoing dental treatment, you are not alone. According to research published in the Dental Research Journal, it is estimated that about 80 percent of Americans experience some level of anxiety regarding visits to the dentist. Of these patients, about five to 14 percent struggle with intense dental anxiety. For some, this fear is so powerful that they avoid visiting the dentist at all, but this can be detrimental to your oral health. Dr. Joseph D. Murray and Dr. William Alexander offer snooze dentistry, also known as sedation dentistry, to ensure you can comfortably receive the care you need. We can discuss your concerns and recommend the best method to help you relax during treatment at our practice in Atlanta, GA.

Negative Effects of Avoiding the Dentist

Many patients avoid essential care due to their dental phobia. However, this can have long-term effects on your oral health and overall well-being. When left untreated, conditions such as gum disease and decay can lead to more serious health issues, including tooth loss.

We want to protect your smile by providing you with leading dental care. Dr. Murray and Dr. Alexander can provide you with effective snooze dentistry to alleviate your concerns and help you relax during your visit.

Who Can Benefit from Snooze Dentistry?

In addition to those with dental phobia, there are many patients who can benefit from snooze dentistry. You may want to consider sedation if you:

  • Struggle to remain still for long periods of time
  • Have back issues
  • Are fearful of injections
  • Have a strong gag reflex
  • Suffer from claustrophobia
  • Have exceptionally sensitive teeth

If you are planning to undergo extensive dental work, such as a full mouth reconstruction, sedation can also improve your treatment experience and the doctor's ability to be more efficient. During your consultation, we encourage you to discuss your fears with Dr. Murray or Dr. Alexander. Then we can arrange the proper method of sedation to help you feel at ease.

Types of Sedation We Offer

We offer two types of snooze dentistry to help you relax during treatment:

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral sedation is a medication that is consumed in pill form. Depending on your level of anxiety, you may be instructed to take the medication as early as the night before treatment. Oral sedation allows you to feel deeply relaxed throughout the procedure.

From friendly service to snooze dentistry, we make every effort to help you feel comfortable in our care.

This form of sedation does not put you to sleep so that you can still respond to instructions from your doctor. However, many patients do not remember much of their visit. For your safety, you should arrange a ride to and from your appointment as the effects of your medication will not wear off for several hours.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide sedation, also known as laughing gas, can help you feel happy and calm. This form of sedation is inhaled through a specially designed mask. The amount of sedation can be closely controlled by your doctor throughout treatment. The effects of nitrous oxide typically wear off within minutes and you should be able to safely drive after the appointment.
